Frequently Asked Questions
What are the criteria to be a service-provider?
  • Identify as a Black, Indigenous or Person of Color (BIPOC)
  • Have an active and verified Inclusive Therapists directory profile
  • Be able to work in the so-called "United States" and submit a W-9 form
    • Post-graduate provisionally licensed therapists unable to work as independent contractors: you belong here. Please kindly see details below.
  • Maintain professional licensure that is in good standing, including post-graduate provisionally licensed therapists
  • Maintain current professional liability insurance
Can post-graduate provisionally licensed therapists apply?

A wholehearted yes! If you meet the criteria above and are fulfilling your supervision requirements, we would be delighted for you to share your services. Pre-graduate students: we invite you to revisit us after graduation 🙂

Post-graduate Provisional Therapists (e.g. licensed associates, interns, supervisees, doctoral candidates) are welcomed and encouraged to apply. If the provisional therapist is unable to work as an independent contractor, their place of work (e.g. group practice, supervisor’s practice) may collect funds on their behalf by submitting their practice's W-9, and signing up for a Bill.com account upon application approval.

100% of funds must go to the Supervisee. Supervisors or practice owners may not receive any portion of the funds, as that is not the intended purpose of the donations. We believe that supervisees should be reimbursed equally as post-supervision therapists. The antiquated supervision structure unfortunately upholds classism (which poses greatest barriers for emerging therapists with marginalized identities), and we hope to create a new, equitable alternative collectively. This is an opportunity for supervisors and group practices to join the movement.

We understand that BI&POC practice owners or supervisors may require a portion of the fees to support their livelihood. (This current system holds us in a bind, which is precisely why we're creating an Equitable Supervision Circle initiative.)

Before beginning the application, we encourage provisional therapists to download a letter we wrote to invite supervisors to join the movement. Download letters below:

If your workplace must receive a portion of the funds, please email us directly for further dialogue. We have alternate, equitable suggestions and would love to work with supervisees and supervisors to make this possible: thrive@mentalhealthliberation.org.

Why do I have to be a verified Inclusive Therapist Member to participate?

Great question! Our Therapy Funds center on BI&POC communities, with priority on people with intersecting marginalized identities. As such, we recognize the added responsibility to uphold a high quality of culturally responsive, identity-affirming care.

Inclusive Therapists, our sibling mental health directory, requires all therapists desiring a profile to complete a thorough verification process that assesses for fit in values and practice. We naturally require the same level of care for Therapy Fund recipients.

  • Safety: verify that service-providers are culturally responsive, 2SLGBTQ+ affirming, and knowledgeable towards providing neurodivergence and disability-affirming care
  • Transparency: recipients can review the therapists' profiles easily to assist with the matching process
  • Shared Values: consistency in ethics and community values.
    • We actively confront and dismantle systemic oppression, the white supremacy myth, ableism/stigma, and injustices rooted in coloniality. We advocate for Landback, Indigenous Sovereignty, Black Liberation, and intersectional justice.
  • Community & Accountability: we continue to learn and grow together
    • We are lifelong learners that hold ourselves to the highest professional standards, while acknowledging that we are wholly imperfect. We lean into the process of collective educating, accountability holding, correcting, and repairing.

If you are seeking a community that celebrates the strengths of and centers the needs of people with marginalized identities, we invite you to consider joining us!

Are memberships free?

Memberships are fully sponsored for Black and Indigenous therapists.

Sliding scale pricing is also available.

No one is turned away on a financial basis. Contact us if you need sponsorship for a membership, especially if you are provisional therapist under supervision. Thank you!

What paperwork do I need to have ready?

Items to have ready before starting the form:

  • a copy of your current professional license
  • a copy of your active professional liability insurance
  • a completed W-9 form (download here)

Service-Providers are independent contractors and will receive a 1099-NEC form at year-end.

For provisional therapists: you are welcomed to to provide your supervisor/group practice's W-9 form for payment purposes.

How are service-providers compensated?

Service-Providers are independent contractors and will receive a 1099-NEC form at year-end.

The current compensation rate is: $100 per therapy session. This is the full, not partial, fee for services rendered. Therapy sessions are free for Service-Users, and Therapists will be paid through the Therapy Fund.  We are hopeful that rates will increase in the future as our program grows and we receive more donations.

We understand that this may not meet your full-fee and we humbly appreciate your consideration to participate in our community-funded efforts.

What is the method of payment?

Therapists will be compensated $100 per session, including "no-shows" and late cancellations, through the Therapy Fund.

Invoicing and payment will be processed through Bill.com.

The Therapist is responsible to submit their invoice after each session and invoices will be reviewed and paid within 7 office days (and likely much sooner!)

How many therapy sessions are covered by the Therapy Fund?

Maximum of 12 funded therapy sessions per Service-User.

Each Service-User begins with 4 approved sessions. Bundles of 4 sessions are extended upon the Therapist's request, up to 12 in total.

(This process help us redistribute funds more accurately to support as many recipients as possible).

What happens after all 12 funded sessions are complete?

Great question! At the first session, we encourage Therapists to dialgoue with Service-Users about the terms of the Therapy Fund, and dialogue about what happens after all sessions covered by the Fund have been used.

As a part of ethical practice, we ask Therapists to create a Continuation of Care plan with Service-Users (e.g. full-fee arrangement, sliding scale-fee arrangement, referrals to other providers or community-care options, etc.) in order to avoid unnecessary interruption in services.

Who are the Therapy Fund recipients/ service-users?

BI&POC Therapy Funds are open BI&POC adult applicants (18+) living in the 50 states/DC in the so-called "United States" that are in need of financial support for mental health therapy.

What is the application process for Service-Users?

The BI&POC Therapy Funds currently extends support to BI&POC adults (18+) living in the 50 states in the so-called "United States" that are in need of financial support for mental health therapy. We aim to prioritize the needs of people with multiple intersecting marginalized identities. We plan to extend these offerings to more locations and age-groups in the future as funding expands.

We will be partnering with different organizations and communities to create Funds that center on specific intersectional identities. For example, we are partnering with Easy Activism to extend care specifically to Black communities. We are also collaborating with Can’t Stop! Won’t Stop! Education Fund to create a Fund to support BI&POC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and Hard of Hearing folks.

Application cycles will open up seasonally. Applicants will be asked to fill out a HIPAA compliant application form that includes explanation of the fund, terms of service (same as described in the Provider's form), their location, and service-provider preferences.

The MHL team and our partners will provide assistance to folks that need help with completing the forms, including phone or video calls. For example, ASL interpreting will be offered for Deaf folks that may not be as comfortable reading forms in English. Currently, the application process is only available in English and we aim to expanding our language offerings with the help of community volunteers and collaborations.

As we receive the applications, our team will begin the matching process, prioritizing people with multiple intersecting marginalized identities. For more information about the matching process, please kindly refer to the Onboarding Process Document for Service-Providers upon completing the verification and application process.

How do I see more details about the terms of service?
Thank you for your generous interest in becoming a Therapy Fund Service-Provider. Please kindly fill out the short eligibility form below to see more details about the Therapy Fund, and to access the application form. You have the option to not apply upon reviewing the details.
I'm a Mental Health Liberation Service-Provider currently collaborating with a Service-User that will benefit from the Therapy Fund. Should I ask them to apply?

Yes, they are welcomed to apply. The application form will have a space for them to tell us their therapist's name to assist with the matching process.

Funds are granted according to the order that we receive the applications, with spots reserved for disabled and neurodivergent applicants that need more time to complete the process.

If you are an MHL Service-Provider sharing this Fund with Service-Users, please let them know that they are welcomed to apply. However, they are not guaranteed a spot and will not be prioritized in the matching process.

Is there support for disabled and/or neurodivgergent folks during the application process?

Yes. A number of spots are reserved for disabled and neurodivergent applicants that need more time to complete the application process.

Our team is also here to support applicants that find reading or filling out forms challenging.

Why is this work important?

Countless studies show that Communities of Color are disproportionately neglected by, excluded from, and even harmed by the mental health care system. BI&POC folks with intersecting marginalized identities (e.g. 2SLGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and disabled communities) face even greater barriers, including discrimination, rejection, stigmatization, gatekeeping, and culturally unsound practices.

The mental health field is predominantly white, cisgender, heterosexual, neurotypical, and non-disabled. It's no surprise that this field also upholds white-centric, cishet-patriarchal, classist and ableist ideology. This ideology is embedded in every layer of the field, from education, examination, training, supervision, to clinical practice.

Inequity and structural violence reduce access to care and healing, and also hinder career opportunities for folks like us. As a result, BI&POC and intersecting marginalized communities suffer, plain and simple.

Until we dismantle these colonial and oppressive structures the mental health field is built upon together (and we will), we first mobilize our collective power to reimagine and reclaim healing for us. We are here to bridge BI&POC with quality, culturally responsive therapy, and to empower future generations of Clinicians of Color.

This is our work, and we hope that you will join our mission.

Do you plan to expand services to more locations?

We sure do! This is only the beginning. With continued community support, we have plans to expand our programs to so-called "US territories" and so-called "Canada" (in recognition of stolen and unceded Indigenous Lands).

We appreciate your advocacy, and we invite you to stay in touch through our newsletter and social media.

Do you plan to expand services to different languages?

Yes, absolutely! At this time, applicants are able to request to work with a therapist that speaks their preferred language. However, the application process is currently in English only, with plans to expand to more languages in the future including Spanish, American Sign Language, and more.

If you wish to donate your translation services, we humbly invite you to get in touch: thrive@mentalhealthliberation.org.
