Why do I have to be a verified Inclusive Therapist Member to participate?

We're glad you asked! Our Therapy Funds are dedicated to supporting BI&POC communities, with a focus on individuals with intersecting marginalized identities. This means we're committed to providing culturally responsive and identity-affirming care at a high standard.

Just like Inclusive Therapists, our sibling mental health directory, requires all providers to undergo a thorough verification process to ensure alignment with our values and practices, we uphold the same level of care here.

Here's what we prioritize:

  • Safety: We verify that service-providers offer culturally responsive, 2SLGBTQ+ affirming, and neurodivergence and disability-affirming care.
  • Transparency: Therapy Fund participants can easily review therapists' profiles to facilitate the matching process.
  • Shared Values: We uphold consistent ethics and community values. We root in collective liberation, actively confront systemic oppression, dismantle white supremacy ideology, challenge ableism & colonial capitalism, and advocate for justice rooted in intersectionality, including Landback, Indigenous Sovereignty, and Black Liberation.
  • Community & Accountability: We are committed to continuous learning and growth. As lifelong learners, we hold ourselves to the highest professional standards while recognizing our imperfections. We embrace collective education, accountability, and repair.

If you are seeking a community that celebrates and centers marginalized communities, we invite you to join us!

Are memberships free?

Memberships are fully sponsored for Black and Indigenous therapists.

Sliding scale pricing is also available.

No one is turned away on a financial basis. Contact us if you need sponsorship for a membership, especially if you are provisional therapist under supervision. Thank you!

How are service-providers compensated?

Service-Providers are independent contractors and will receive a 1099-NEC form at year-end.

The current compensation rate is: $125 per therapy session. This is the full, not partial, fee for all services rendered. (Therapy sessions are free for Service-Users, and therapists will be paid directly through the Therapy Fund.)

We understand that this may be a reduced fee for therapists, and appreciate your consideration to participate in our community-funded efforts.

Provisional therapists (e.g. licensed associates, interns, supervisees, doctoral candidates) are welcomed and encouraged to apply. Please see: Can post-graduate provisionally licensed therapists apply?

Can post-graduate provisionally licensed therapists apply?

A wholehearted yes! If you meet the criteria above and are fulfilling your supervision requirements, we would be delighted for you to share your services. Pre-graduate students: we invite you to revisit us after graduation 🙂

Post-graduate Provisional Therapists (e.g. licensed associates, interns, supervisees, doctoral candidates) are welcomed and encouraged to apply. If the provisional therapist is unable to work as an independent contractor, their place of work (e.g. group practice, supervisor’s practice) may collect funds on their behalf by submitting their practice's W-9, and signing up for a Bill.com account upon application approval.

100% of funds must go to the Supervisee. Supervisors or practice owners may not receive any portion of the funds, as that is not the intended purpose of the donations. We believe that supervisees should be reimbursed equally as post-supervision therapists. The antiquated supervision structure unfortunately upholds classism (which poses greatest barriers for emerging therapists with marginalized identities), and we hope to create a new, equitable alternative collectively. This is an opportunity for supervisors and group practices to join the movement.

We understand that BI&POC practice owners or supervisors may require a portion of the fees to support their livelihood. (This current system holds us in a bind, which is precisely why we're creating an Equitable Supervision Circle initiative.)

Before beginning the application, we encourage provisional therapists to download a letter we wrote to invite supervisors to join the movement. Download letters below:

If your workplace must receive a portion of the funds, please email us directly for further dialogue. We have alternate, equitable suggestions and would love to work with supervisees and supervisors to make this possible: thrive@mentalhealthliberation.org.

What paperwork do I need to have ready?

Items to have ready before starting the form:

  • a copy of your current professional license
  • a copy of your active professional liability insurance
  • a completed W-9 form (download here)

Service-Providers are independent contractors and will receive a 1099-NEC form at year-end.

For provisional therapists: you are welcomed to to provide your supervisor/group practice's W-9 form for payment purposes.

Provisional therapists (e.g. licensed associates, interns, supervisees, doctoral candidates) are welcomed and encouraged to apply. Please read: Can post-graduate provisionally licensed therapists apply?

What is the method of payment?

Therapists will be compensated $125 per therapy session (including up to 1 "no-show" or late cancellation) through the Therapy Fund.

Invoicing and payment will be processed through Bill.com.

The therapist is responsible to submit their invoice after each session and invoices will be reviewed and paid within 7 office days (and likely much sooner!)

How many therapy sessions are covered by the Therapy Fund?

The Therapy Fund extends 12 therapy sessions per participant.

What happens after all 12 funded sessions are complete?

Great question! The Therapy Fund offers short-term mental health therapy that serves a small part of a greater, overall care plan. During the first session, we request the therapists to engage in dialogue with service-users about the terms of the Therapy Fund and what occurs after all covered sessions have been utilized.

As part of ethical practice, therapists are requested to develop a Continuation of Care plan with service-users. This plan may include options such as a full-fee or sliding scale fee structure, referrals to other care services, or exploring community-care options (such as peer support, group therapy, and more). This proactive approach aims to prevent any unnecessary interruption in mental health care.

Who are the Therapy Fund participants?

BIPOC Therapy Funds are open Black, Indigenous and People of Color applicants (age 18+) living in the so-called "United States" that are in need of financial support for mental health therapy.

What is the application process for participants?

Application cycles open up seasonally. Applicants will be asked to fill out a HIPAA compliant application form that includes explanation of the fund, terms of service (same as described in the Provider's form), their location, and service-provider preferences.

The MHL team will provide application assistance to folks that need support with the process.

As we receive the applications, our team will begin the matching process, prioritizing people with multiple intersecting marginalized identities.

For more information about the matching process, please kindly refer to the Onboarding Process Document for Service-Providers upon completing the verification and application process.

How do I see more details about the terms of service?

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Therapy Fund Service-Provider. Please kindly fill out the short eligibility form below to see more details about the Therapy Fund, and to access the application form.

You have the option to not apply upon reviewing the details.

Is there support for Disabled, Neurodivergent, or novice computer-users during the application process?

Yes. A number of spots are reserved for applicants that need more time or support to complete the application process.

Our team is also here to provide application assistance.

Why is this work important?

Numerous studies illustrate the systemic neglect, exclusion, and harm that Communities of Color experience within the mental health care system. BI&POC individuals with intersecting marginalized identities, such as those within the 2SLGBTQ+, Neurodivergent, and Disabled communities, encounter even more severe barriers, including discrimination, rejection, stigmatization, gatekeeping, and culturally inappropriate practices.

The mental health profession is predominantly composed of white, cisgender, non-queer, neurotypical, and non-Disabled individuals. Consequently, the field perpetuates ideologies that are white-centric, cis-hetero-patriarchal, classist, and ableist, deeply ingrained across every level, from education and training to clinical practice.

These entrenched inequities and structural violence not only limit access to healing but also restrict career opportunities for individuals from BI&POC and intersecting marginalized communities. The consequences are painful and undeniable.

Until we collectively dismantle the colonial and oppressive structures embedded within the mental health field, we must first harness our collective power to reimagine and reclaim healing for ourselves. Our mission is to bridge BI&POC communities with quality, culturally responsive therapy and empower future generations of Clinicians of Color. We hope that you'll join us.

Do you plan to expand services to more locations?

We sure do! This is only the beginning. With continued community support, we have plans to expand our programs to so-called "US territories" and so-called "Canada" (in recognition of stolen and unceded Indigenous Lands).

We appreciate your advocacy, and we invite you to stay in touch through our newsletter and social media.
